Archaeologists have found numerous artefacts from Ambalavayal, Sultan Bathery and the forests of Wayanad. Relics were unearthed from Muthanga, Nalluvayal and Edathara. Archaeology students from educational institutions in and around Calicut also joined in the efforts to preserve these relics with the help of the State Archaeology Department. It led to the establishment of the Wayanad Heritage Museum. This is one of Kerala's largest and best archaeological museums and is located at Ambalavayal, about 12 km from Sultan Bathery.
The exhibits at the museum are arranged in four blocks – Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi and Jeevanusmruthi. Veerasmruthi talks about brave warriors of the bygone era. The pictorial rock edicts erected on the tombs of warriors announcing their heroic deeds are kept here. The artefacts displayed at Gothrasmruthi and Jeevanusmruthi are associated with tribal life. The Devasmruthi block attracts those interested in archaeology, as objects from the Neolithic age to the 17th century are exhibited here. The large-scale research and attempts to preserve Edakkal Caves has attracted attention to the museum.
