Known as the Lion of Kerala, Pazhassi Smarakam draws many people to pay homage to the ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Kottayam. The Pazhassi tomb was constructed on the banks of the river Kabani in Mananthavady where the king’s body was cremated. In 1996, this tomb was converted into a museum where relics such as Pazhassi Raja's sword are preserved. The open-air museum is managed by Kerala State Archaeology Department, depicting the life and story of Pazhassi Raja. He is remembered for his love and undying loyalty to his people. From 1793 till his martyrdom in 1805, Pazhassi Raja resisted the East India Company. He was among the few rulers who could score a military victory against the British.
